5 Tips for Organizing Your Closet

Five Tips For Oganizing Your ClosetLast week, I wrote about how to save time in your morning routine, which included organizing your closet. I know some of you have trouble with keeping your closet organized, which inspired me to share my tips on closet organization. These tips will add the bliss back to your wardrobe (and sanity) because you’ll feel ready to take on each day with a great outfit from your organized space.

Divide and conquer:

First, separate two bags labeled “keep” and “donate.” Go through your clothes and find what fits and what doesn’t fit, what has holes and what’s good enough to keep. Here’s a good rule of thumb, if it’s not damaged but you haven’t worn it in over a year, it’s time to donate it. Once you’ve gone through your clothes, it’ll be easier to organize.

Cut the clutter:

If you keep other items like books in your closet in addition to clothes, you might want to ditch them. If you’re short on space, find a clever way to store these items. However, keep your closet dedicated to clothes, shoes and accessories. You’ll find that you’ll feel less overwhelmed getting ready in the morning and you’ll stay organized.

Color code:

I color code my closet because it’s the best way to stay organized. Then, within each color category, my clothing in categorized from sleeveless, short-sleeved, long-sleeved, sweaters, etc. Find the best way to keep your clothes uniformed in your closet. You’ll know where every item is with ease, which will keep you in track of your clothes.

Visually appealing:

One of the best ways to make your closet visually appealing is to keep your organization consistent in your closet. Find sleek hangers that will save space. Add a shoe rack to organize your shoes. If you’re storing scarves, belts and bags, separate them into their own category and find pretty storage to keep everything in its place.

Keep it up:

Don’t spend the time organizing your closet just to have it in shambles a week later. Make sure to keep up with your newly-organized closet by taking the time to put away your laundry each week in its proper place. Try to set aside time once a month to clean your closet and keep your organization up-to-date.

I hope you all have found some inspiration to organize your closet. How do you keep your closet organized? Make sure to leave your tips below, or tweet them to @BlissBrunette.

    • Thank you for your comment! I definitely love any thin, velvet-like hanger that will save space in my closet and keep my sleeveless tops from falling off the hangers. These hangers are very popular at Target, Bed Bath and Beyond or Home Goods!

  1. These are some great tips! I know my closet needs some serious organization and the color coding would definitely help with picking out outfits for work. I usually organize by work clothes, to dresses to casual clothes. But further organization would def improve my closet.

  2. great tips, do you have anything that could help me I am constantly getting marks on the shoulders of my clothes that sit in the closet too long without being worn. I don’t use metal hangers so it’s not from that maybe a bag would help. thanks for any advice

  3. This is how I have my closet set up too! I also turn all of my hangers around at the beginning of the year, and at the end of the year, the hangers that are still backwards (the clothes I haven’t worn) gets donated/tossed!

  4. Love this! My husband and I share a walk-in closet and just did a massive clean out of it last weekend. It felt so good to color code all my clothes! I also took a wooden rod and placed it on two command hooks and looped all my scarfs over it; it felt so good to get them off the floor and put them up in a pretty way!

    • I love the scarf idea! I’ve seen this done before and it looks incredible if you have the space for it. Unfortunately, I have a small closet, so I useother methods for organizing scarves. Thank you so much for your comment.

    • I would purchase some hangers that are thin and sleek to save as much space as possible. This was a life saver for me! Also, find some baskets that you can place on your closet self to organize any other items you don’t want seen! Hope these tips help and happy organizing. Thank you for your comment!
