5 Beauty Mistakes You’re Making

For girls, beauty is an essential component of our daily routine; but there are a slew of rules we need to follow regularly in order to keep up with our hygiene. If you’re breaking these five rules, you might want to correct them if you want to better your beauty routine. You’ll add a little bliss to your life knowing you’re following these cardinal beauty rules.

Matching foundation to the back of your hand:

Most people in the makeup aisle are guilty of this. The results are harsh lines on your neck because you didn’t properly match the shade to your skin. The best place to find your match is on your neck. Even if your neck is lighter than your face, the makeup will all blend naturally.

Sleeping in your makeup:

I don’t know how anyone can sleep in their makeup. If you have continuous breakouts, it could be due to your nighttime routine. Remove makeup with makeup remover wipes, wash your face with a cleanser and apply night moisturizer. No exceptions. Your skin will thank you.

Keeping makeup for too long:

You don’t want to waste a product, but you know that keeping your color foundation from June won’t do any good in October. If it has been a few months since you have last used a product, it’s best to toss it. Old makeup can cause breakouts and buildup in your pores.

Wearing the wrong shade of concealer:

People think you should buy concealer the same shade as your foundation to better hide dark circles, puffiness, etc. However, you should buy concealer two shades lighter when applying under your eyes. This highlights and defines the area without exposing problem areas.

Not cleaning your makeup brushes:

This problem definitely affects your hygiene negatively. Think about it: caking on makeup from the same brush you use daily for months on end isn’t healthy. You should clean your makeup brushes at least once a week to avoid acne or bacteria build up on your skin.

Are you guilty of breaking one (or more) of these rules? What are beauty rules should we add to the list? Make sure to leave a comment below!

  1. I have made the mistake of sleeping in my make-up before and I always regret it !!. Its such a horrible feeling to wake-up and see big black panda eyes in the mirror ahah 😉 Oh and I’ve recently started buying lighter shades of concealer and it makes such a difference particularly under the eyes !! x Really liked this post !.

    • Yes! Sleeping in makeup is not healthy for your skin. And you will regret it (for the panda eyes and from acne). I love that you changed your shade of concealer. That’s a great start! Thanks for your comment.

  2. The only thing here I’m guilty of is not washing my brushes regularly… But you have reminded me! 🙂

  3. I make an effort to fully take my makeup off every night, but I’ve been guilty of sleeping in it occasionally. I know I shouldn’t, and I always pay the price later.

    • Most people have this problem because they think “well, once in a while in okay.” But, if it becomes a habit, it can be bad for your skin. As long as you’re not doing this every night with a full face of makeup on, it’s okay to slip now and then! 🙂 Thanks for your comment.

    • Try to set a timer on your phone about an hour before you go to bed and label the timer “remove makeup.” Keep the alarm going everyday until you don’t need the reminder anymore! Thanks for your comment.

  4. My biggest tip? Make sure you’re moisturizing properly! So many people just moisturize their face with a heavy cream that sits on top of their skin.

Pick a light moisturizer WITH SPF (even my body lotion has SPF, PROTECT THAT SKIN PEOPLE!) – when you apply to your face, don’t stop at your chin, get your whole neck AND your chest.

This is the area of your body that is prone to wrinkles and sun damage, not just your face. Protect it all!

    • YES! moisturizing is so important and people don’t do it as often as they should. Some people only put on cream with SPF if they’re going to the beach or be outside all day when they should be doing that every single day. Such a great reminder for beauty tips. Thanks for your comment!

  5. I have falling asleep with my makeup on and it’s always sucked the next day, usually it’s just mascara but I worry about the damages it will cause to my lashes. My sister in law has eye shadows that are five or six years old and it really bothers me!! Not healthy for your skin.

    • Yes, you will notice some problems with your lashes down the road. They will begin thinning out and falling out more frequently if you don’t remove your makeup properly. There is also bacteria (from mascara) that sits on your eyelashes, which can cause eye problems. That’s why it’s SUPER important to remove your eye makeup every single night. Thanks so much for your comment.

    • It’s definitely a common misconception. People think matching makeup to your hand is the same shade as your face, which isn’t true in most cases. This leads to makeup lines left from your neck and face being different shades. Your neck is the most accurate place to match your shade for face makeup. Thanks for your comment!

    • I’m with you there, girl. Makeup is expensive, which is why I try to buy the necessities. I try to NOT overbuy (which is so difficult) but it helps with wasting money or products in the long run. Thanks for your comment!
