5 Beauty Mistakes You’re Making

BB52515

For girls, beauty is an essential component of our daily routine; but there are a slew of rules we need to follow regularly in order to keep up with our hygiene. If you’re breaking these five rules, you might want to correct them if you want to better your beauty routine. You’ll add a little bliss to your life knowing you’re following these cardinal beauty rules.

Matching foundation to the back of your hand:

Most people in the makeup aisle are guilty of this. The results are harsh lines on your neck because you didn’t properly match the shade to your skin. The best place to find your match is on your neck. Even if your neck is lighter than your face, the makeup will all blend naturally.

Sleeping in your makeup:

I don’t know how anyone can sleep in their makeup. If you have continuous breakouts, it could be due to your nighttime routine. Remove makeup with makeup remover wipes, wash your face with a cleanser and apply night moisturizer. No exceptions. Your skin will thank you.

Keeping makeup for too long:

You don’t want to waste a product, but you know that keeping your color foundation from June won’t do any good in October. If it has been a few months since you have last used a product, it’s best to toss it. Old makeup can cause breakouts and buildup in your pores.

Wearing the wrong shade of concealer:

People think you should buy concealer the same shade as your foundation to better hide dark circles, puffiness, etc. However, you should buy concealer two shades lighter when applying under your eyes. This highlights and defines the area without exposing problem areas.

Not cleaning your makeup brushes:

This problem definitely affects your hygiene negatively. Think about it: caking on makeup from the same brush you use daily for months on end isn’t healthy. You should clean your makeup brushes at least once a week to avoid acne or bacteria build up on your skin.

Are you guilty of breaking one (or more) of these rules? What are beauty rules should we add to the list? Make sure to leave a comment below!

Feel Good Friday: Happiness is a Choice

BB52215

Life can have its peaks and valleys. We have moments where we feel on top of the world, and we have moments where we want to crawl under a rock. When we are in a valley (and want to crawl under a rock) we feel like there’s no hope and we lose our sense of self and happiness. Losing our happiness is something that we have all dealt with. However, it’s important to remember that we are responsible for our own happiness. Allow me to explain.

First, I know there are going to be people who will ask, “Happiness isn’t a choice. Look at people who suffer from depression and anxiety.” I’m in no way trying to say that depression and anxiety aren’t real diseases and should be disregarded. I personally suffer from mild OCD and anxiety, so I understand the problems that come from these disorders.

That being said, I know you might think, “I can’t be helped and I’ll never be happy.” I’m here to tell you that’s not the case. You can and will be happy if you decide to put in the time and effort to make yourself happy. You cannot rely on medication, other people or certain events to make you happy. Here are some ways to create your own happiness.

Seek fulfillment:

Pursuing a goal and working your way to achieving it brings out happiness you won’t be able to deny. If you want to lose weight or take your blog to the next level, keeping a list of goals and working on them regularly will help with your overall happiness.

Find your faith:

Some people rely on a concept more powerful than themselves to feel happiness. Whether you’re looking to find God or pursue a different religion, faith can help bring you inner happiness. Faith gives us something to believe in, which is why it’s powerful and helpful for creating happiness.

Follow your bliss:

What’s the one thing that makes you apologetically happy? Find what sparks your passion for life and do it everyday. Maybe you love to workout or write. Whatever your bliss is, make sure it’s part of your everyday life. “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.”

Make happiness a priority:

Think of small, everyday things like keeping a Pinterest board with inspirational quotes or spend each morning meditating and giving thanks for your all of your blessings. Make an honest attempt to seek happiness everyday and you will find happiness in life.

I hope you learned a little more about happiness and how you can create a happy life for yourself. How do you create your own happiness? Make sure to leave a comment below.

With these three recipes, you’ll feel refreshed for spring and summer. You’ll add a little bliss to your life (and save money) with these at-home creations.

Avocados:

Avocados are a staple power food that everyone should incorporate into his or her diet. You can also incorporate avocados in your beauty routine. If you’re looking for an inexpensive hair mask; mash-up one half of ripe avocado into a bowl, and mix with a little honey and olive oil to strengthen hair.

Limes:

Whether you’re using a lime for a chicken fiesta salad or on your body for a citrus scrub, limes are packed with invigorating nutrients your skin will love. Create a body scrub with sugar, olive oil and the pulp from a lime for a skin treatment that will leave your skin smooth.

Grapes:

Do you have oily skin during spring and summer? Grapes might be the answer to your problems. The acidity in grapes will help combat oily skin. You can create a grape, skin treatment by mixing honey, grapes, and yogurt. Apply once a week for fresh, oil-free skin.

How to Deal: Toxic Friendships

BB51515

We all have been there. And trust me when I say it’s not a fun place to be in. You love and care about your friend, but his or her problems adds stress on your life. Maybe it’s a friend you’ve known for years, but they constantly put you down. Toxic friendships are never easy to handle, but hopefully these tips can add some bliss to your life whether you’re experiencing a toxic friendship or have been through one in the past.

What is a toxic friendship?

A toxic friendship can be different depending on the person. To create a condensed list, a toxic friend is someone who adds negative, unnecessary stress to your life, makes you feel bad about yourself, puts you down, etc. The relationship is most likely one-sided (where you’re constantly supporting or helping them and they don’t return the favor when you need it). You find yourself spending more time ignoring them than wanting to hangout with them.

Can you stay friends with someone who is toxic?

This is another question with unlimited answers. In some cases, yes you can be friends with the person if you decide to talk to them about your friendship and how it’s causing you stress. If you can work past it, that’s the best case scenario. However, it can be difficult for that to happen because oftentimes, a toxic person won’t change. Sometimes, it’s best to distance yourself and remove yourself from the situation. If the friendship is particularly bad, it’s best to cut ties because you don’t need to deal with a bad friend. Your health and happiness should come first, even if it means removing a person from your life.

How do you know when to end the friendship?

Ending a friendship can be extremely difficult, but it can be necessary if your happiness is on the line. You should consider ending a toxic friendship no matter what because you shouldn’t feel stressed from a relationship. However, that’s easier said than done. If you find yourself exhausted from helping them through their daily problems, that’s a sign you should end the friendship. Or, if you feel that the person tears you down more than they build you up, you should also end the friendship. You shouldn’t be friends with someone who constantly brings you down. Be with people who build you up.

Although this topic is very difficult for anyone to handle, remember that you deserve to be with people who make you feel good and lift your spirits. Don’t have a relationship with someone who only adds negative energy. If you surround yourself with positive people, you’ll live a positive life.

Have you ever had a toxic friend? How did you deal with it? What advice do you have for someone who has a toxic friendship? Make sure to leave a comment below!

Spring and summer are seasons for bold, bright colors, which everyone loves. Sometimes, it’s nice to change your look with classic, crisp colors like white. Currently, I’m loving white everything for spring and summer from skirts to sandals.

What I love about white is that it’s a versatile option for any occasion. With one white piece in your outfit, you can easily transform your look. White also looks incredible with a tan because it stands out against your skin.

Some white items I’m looking to add to my closet are: a white midi skirt, cross-body bag, sandals, jeans and a crochet top. With these five items, it’s easy to create very different looks. Or, if you’re feeling daring, you can create an all-white outfit with these five items.

Beauty Blogger Tag

beautybloggertagMy friend Danielle from It’s A Great Blog After All and Brittany from Little Britt Of Bliss both tagged me to do the Beauty Blogger Tag. I normally don’t do tags unless they coincide with my blog, but since it’s beauty related, why not?

1. Is your hair naturally curly or straight?

Naturally Curly

2. Do you dye it yourself or go to a salon?

True story, I’ve never dyed my hair before. I’m too afraid to.

3. Do you wear the same style everyday, or do you change it?

It depends on the day. When I wash my hair, I leave it natural. On second day hair, I curl it.

4. Do you do your own mani/pedi or go to a salon?

Most of the time, I go to a salon.

5. How often do you change your nail polish?

Not that often. I keep my nails natural most of the time.

6. Do you polish your toes in the winter or just the summer?

I keep my toes painted even in the winter. I’m just less concerned if they chip. In the summer, I make sure they’re done.

7. How long does it take for you to put on makeup?

10 minutes or less.

8. What do you do first? Face or eyes?

Face.

9. Do you collect makeup or just buy what you need when you need it?

Buy it when I need it. I don’t want to buy something unless I know I’m going to use it.

10. How often do you wear false eyelashes?

I have never worn false eyelashes. If you couldn’t tell, I prefer to keep my look natural.

11. Do you do a full face of makeup everyday?

Never! I don’t wear foundation. I just apply concealer under my eyes and over any pimples.

12. Do you wear makeup when you’re home alone or with family?

No. Unless I have plans to leave the house.

13. Will you leave the house without makeup?

To go to the gym or to run some errands, but most of the time I’ll at least have the basics on (concealer, blush, eyebrow pencil and mascara).

14. How many high-end products do you have?

Most of my skin and face products are high end because I have sensitive skin, so I need to be mindful of what I use. Almost all of my makeup is either Lancôme and Estēe Lauder, which are both high end.

15. Do you plan your OOTD every night or decide when you’re getting dressed?

It depends on the day. Oftentimes, I have an idea of my outfit the night before, but I don’t set everything out. If I have an event or special occasion, my outfit is planned.

16. How often do you change your handbag?

Not often. Since my boyfriend bought my Michael Kors bag for Christmas, I don’t use anything else.

17. What time do you wake up and go to sleep?

I go to bed around 10:30 or 11 p.m., and I’ll wake up around 7:30 to begin the day.

18. How often or when do you workout?

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays I work out from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. and on Tuesdays and Thursdays I work out from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m.

5 Foods You Need In Your Diet

BB5815Summer is quickly approaching, which means if you’re looking to achieve your best summer body, you need to get to work. Although working out is a large component of a healthy appearance, your diet may be the reason you’re not seeing results.

If you’re looking to shrink your stomach and blast fat, try incorporating these five foods in your diet. It will help cleanse your system and you’ll see results just before you need to wear a bikini. You’ll add some bliss this summer knowing you’re eating a healthy diet.

Berries:

Packed with rich antioxidants and vitamins, berries are fruits you should be reaching for on a daily basis. Make a homemade berry shake or add them to oatmeal.  Berries are a power food you need to fight fat before summer.

Avocados:

You might be thinking, “Avocados are packed with fat, that can’t be healthy.” Fear not because although there is fat, it’s healthy fat, which your body needs. They’re also loaded with fiber. They’re good for your skin, help digestion and lowers cholesterol.

Oatmeal:

Raw, plain oatmeal (not the packaged ones with different flavors) is healthy for you because it contains fiber. This keeps you feeling full longer, which prevents snacking and overeating. Have one cup in the morning and mix with cinnamon, walnuts and berries for a satisfying breakfast.

Eggs:

Eggs are packed with protein, which you need to stay energized all day. Eggs contain amino acids, which helps repair muscles. This is especially great if you’re working out regularly. Whether you’re eating them hard-boiled or in an omelet, eggs are always a good option.

Quinoa:

Quinoa contains the eight essential amino acids to put protein to good use. Aside from that, it’s a healthy carbohydrate you don’t need to feel guilty about. It’s a versatile food you can incorporate in your lunch and dinner.

What foods do you need to eat more of from this list? Make sure to leave a comment below!

Fashion Wish List: May

BB5615Items Listed: Bag from Target ($26.99); Jeans from Ann Taylor Loft ($59.50); Kimono from Express ($59.50) and Romper from Francesca’s ($44).

In the middle of spring, it’s natural to want new items to wear for the upcoming months. I’m listing my current fashion wish list. Hopefully, you’ll feel inspired to revamp your wardrobe for spring and summer. Here’s what I’m loving:

Colorful Bags:

I own two cross-body bags: one black and the other brown. I don’t have any bold, colorful bags to wear for spring and summer, which is perfect for this time of year. Target has a ton of options for inexpensive bags that are also in bright colors.

White Denim:

I’ve been longing of the day where I find the perfect pair of white denim. And I’m happy to say I’ve found a pair at Ann Taylor Loft. What I love about these is that they’re straight ankle cut and not jeggings. I want a pair that’s loose-fitting for spring and summer.

Crochet Kimonos:

Even though these have been popular for awhile now, I still don’t own one. I like the idea of having an all-black kimono with a crochet detailing because it’s perfect for outdoor concerts and trips to the beach. Essentially, this kimono screams spring and summer.

Rompers:

I owned a few rompers back in high school. Now that I’ve officially grown out of them, it’s time for some new ones. I love this black romper with crochet detailing. It’s sleek and classy enough to wear out and feel like you’re dressed up, but you’re secretly comfortable.

I hope you all found this list to be inspiring and get you in the mood for spring and summer. What is on your fashion wish list for this month? Make sure to leave a comment below!

5 Self-Care Tips

BB5415

When we are bombarded with work, school, internships or other responsibilities, we tend to forget to take care of ourselves the way we truly deserve. I’m sharing five self-care tips you should treat yourself to every week. If you’re looking to add some bliss in your life (and routine) keep on reading.

1. Catch some Zzz’s:

Beauty rest is important. You should at least get seven hours of sleep each night. However, if you find yourself only sleeping five or six hours a night, treat yourself to nine hours of sleep to catch up on so much needed rest. You’ll feel energized to take on the week.

2. Be outside in nature:

Walking on a trail or on the beach can do wonders for your health, mood and spirit. You should always treat yourself to some vitamin D (from the sun) and clear your mind by appreciating the beautiful world around you. This will relieve any stress and prepare you for a busy day or week.

3. Meditate and reflect:

Try to incorporate mediation and reflection in your life. Even if it’s for 10 minutes a day, it’s important to calm the mind and body. Or, you can reflect on your list of goals you have accomplished or create new goals you plan to accomplish. This will help relax your mind.

4. Cleanse your system:

Take the week to detox your body. Be mindful of what you put into your system. Eat plenty of vegetables, fresh fruit and protein. Cut out any processed foods or foods that make you feel bloated. You’ll feel refreshed, healthy and capable of accomplishing any tasks for the week.

5. Treat yourself:

I like to take time on Sunday to treat myself whether it’s an at-home spa day (mani/pedi, face mask, hair mask, etc.) or watching a movie that will give me an educated perspective. Regardless of how you treat yourself, make sure it’s a healthy treat because you deserve to feel good.

Why Your Weight Shouldn’t Matter

BB5115

I always hear one particular motivation for going to the gym. Most people want to lose weight (i.e. weigh less when they step on a scale). This is the worst motivation for wanting to go to the gym. Hopefully, you’ll gain some insight (and bliss) as to why you shouldn’t care about the number on the scale.

Why weight doesn’t matter:

I know women who are 5’7″ tall and weigh 135 pounds, but are completely out of shape. You would think being the perfect size means that you’re fit and healthy. This is simply not the case. I know women who are 5’3″ and weigh 160 pounds, and are in the best shape of their lives. You can’t associate someone’s weight with their health (in some cases). Of course, if someone is 200 pounds overweight, then it’s a problem. But in the case of people who regularly go to the gym and have a healthy diet, there is no room to judge. All bodies are different.

How do you overcome this misconception:

Don’t go to the gym to lose weight. In fact, don’t weigh yourself on a regular basis. Let’s be honest, the last time I weighed myself was in October, and I have no intentions on stepping on the scale. Why? Because I know that I am fit, healthier and happier than I was in October. For me, that is what matters and not the number on a scale.

What does matter:

It matters how you feel about yourself when working out regularly. It matters how fit and healthy you are. Anyone can lose 25 pounds, but not everyone can lift, train and continuously better their own bodies. It takes time, patience and dedication, but it’s worth it. It also matters how you look. You might lose inches instead of pounds, but inches are more important when trying on clothes. You’ll feel more confident, which matters more than your weight.

I hope this post helped anyone who feels discouraged about their progress. Not everyone’s progress is the same. Don’t focus on weight, focus on how you feel.

Do you struggle with the number on the scale? Share your story and insights below in the comments!

What to Wear: Graduation

BB42915

Products mentioned: Ann Taylor loft dress ($79.50); GAP dress ($69.95); Old Navy dress ($36.94); and New York and Company dress ($59.95).

May is just a few days away, which means graduation season is upon us. This means attending award ceremonies, senior picnics and other events to end an important chapter in one’s life. The main event of the week is commencement, so you’ll want a dress that is comfortable and chic. You’ll add bliss in your life knowing you picked a versatile dress with little hassle.

1. The white dress:

If you have an olive-based skin tone, a white dress is a great option for you. It’s feminine, simple but you’ll still attract attention. If you don’t want an all-white dress, try finding one with polka dots or stripes. What’s great about a white dress is you can add fun shoes to complete your look.

2. The patterned dress:

If you prefer to wear dresses with patterns, then dress number two is your BFF for graduation. What I love about this dress is that the pattern isn’t too overwhelming, so you’ll stand out without standing out too much. It’s the perfect middle-of-the-road option.

3. The LBD:

If you’re looking to keep it classic and elegant, the little black dress is right for you. If you’re not too keen on bright colors and bold patterns, it’s best wearing a black dress. Perks of wearing this dress: all of your photos will look slimming!

4. The bold, bright dress:

To anyone who would rather make a statement with their graduation outfit, dress number four is for you. Sometimes, we just need bold colors in our lives, and graduation is a perfect time to do it. Why not go out of college with a bang?

What dress is your favorite for graduation? If you’re graduating soon, what do you plan on wearing? Make sure to leave a comment below!

5 Inexpensive Beauty Hacks

BB42715

We all have mornings where we want a few extra minutes of rest, and we realize we are running late. Or, you’re trying to save money on beauty products because (let’s be honest) they are expensive. Whether you’re having a lazy day or you’re trying to save some money, here are five beauty hacks you need in your life right now:

1. Don’t want to wash your hair, but you don’t have dry shampoo?

Try baby powder: I prefer to use baby powder over dry shampoo sometimes. It adds a ton of volume to your locks and baby powder ALWAYS smells good. Simply dab some in the oily parts of your hair. Plus, you’ll save money not spending $5 on a small bottle of dry shampoo.

2. Don’t want to spend $15 on a lip-plumping serum for your lips?

Try peppermint oil: Peppermint has natural, lip-plumping properties. Have you ever used a mint, menthol lip balm and your lips feel tingly? That’s due to the essential oils. Apply some drop of this oil in your lip gloss (or a homemade scrub) and you’ll have luscious lips.

3. Want your lips to have a matte finish without spending money on MAC products?

Use concealer: Apply concealer on your lips before applying your lipstick. If it has a glossy finish, the concealer will help to create a matte finish. Instead of going out and spending money on a high-end MAC product, you can use what you own to achieve the same look!

4. Need dry hair, but don’t want to use a hairdryer?

Try a T-shirt: Hear me out. Wrapping your hair in a T-shirt will not only dry it faster, but also it will help your hair from damages. Towels pull on the roots of your hair, which causes breakage. T-shirts are safer and healthier than heat or towels.

5. Trying to fight under-eye puffiness?

Put spoons in the fridge: If you don’t want to spend money on under eye products that fight puffiness, place two metal spoons in the fridge before bed. When you wake up in the morning, place the spoons under your eyes. This will reduce swelling instantly.

What are your inexpensive, lazy girl beauty hacks? Make sure to leave a comment below telling me what trick is your favorite!

Fear of the Future

SONY DSC

May is just around the corner, which means that if you’re a senior in high school or college, you know the dreaded G-word is near. If you’re still in college or high school, maybe you’re looking for a summer internship or job to apply for. If you’re out of college, maybe you want to try a new career path. We all fear the unknown. We aren’t sure of what the next step is whether it’s graduate school or to live abroad for a year. I hope to share a little insight and a lot of bliss because fearing the unknown is challenging. But, remember that you’re not alone and you can overcome this.

I’m in a position where I’m not sure what will come next. Yes, I do plan to complete my Master’s by next March, but as far as a job or where I should go after school, I’m lost. Oftentimes, I find myself planning these scenarios about where I should move and what career I should pursue. As you can imagine, it’s exhausting to spend your time worrying about life that’s months away.

First, take a deep breath and pat yourself on the back; whether you’re graduating, moving to a new state, applying for a new job or beginning a new business, you are taking a risk in life. Your bravery and confidence should be celebrated.

Next, remember it’s okay to not have everything figure out. If you’re three weeks away from graduating college and you don’t have a full-time job or you’re unsure of if you should go to grad school, it’s okay. There is no rush. Yes, it’s good to have a plan, but it’s not okay to have a plan that you’re not 100 percent committed to. Don’t apply for a job you’ll hate just because you’ll make $18 an hour. You should take the time to research and find what you’re passionate about before you apply for a job.

If you’re not in college, but you are experiencing a change in your career or beginning your own business, remember that you can do this. Don’t waste time thinking of what could go wrong and focus on everything that could go right. Clearly, you’ve found a career or idea you love and are passionate about, so put all your time and energy into it and do the best you can. With positive energy, you will only succeed.

Finally, remember that you’re not alone. Yes, graduation, new careers and new places are terrifying, but don’t be afraid of the future. Life is about adventure; and you deserve to enjoy every second of it.

Are you experiencing a big change in life? Make sure to leave a comment below with how you deal with the fear of the unknown.

Fashion Essentials For Finals Week

BB42215Any college student will tell you that finals week isn’t the best week of the year. With tests to study for, essays to complete, and a room filled with things to pack, it’s a stressful time. While in the midst of packing, make sure to leave these three essentials out to wear during your last week at school. You’ll add some bliss to your life, and you will have one less thing to stress about so you can ace those finals. Here are my top three items you should wear during finals week:

Comfortable T-shirts:

I don’t know one person who doesn’t love plain, baggy T-shirts. They can be worn with anything and you won’t worry about feeling too warm while taking an exam. If you tend to feel cold, pair a lightweight cardigan over your shirt.

Canvas shoes:

Canvas shoes are comfortable; and you can pair them with different looks. If you want to dress down a skirt, pair canvas shoes with them. Or, if you’re into the shorts and T-shirt combo, you can wear them, too. Canvas shoes are very versatile and perfect for finals week.

Soft shorts:

Elastic waistbands are my BFF. Why would you ever choose denim over loose, soft shorts? If you’re someone who loves comfortable clothing, you need these in your life for finals and any other day of the year. I love that they’re still dressy even though they’re shorts.

What fashion essentials do you wear during finals week? Make sure to leave a comment below, or tweet me @BlissBrunette!

Lip Colors For Spring

BB42015

I love when I can finally swap out my winter lip colors for my spring lip colors. It’s like packing away all your thick sweaters and bringing out your skirts for the season; it’s both refreshing and exciting. I decided to share my top four lip colors I’ve been wearing for spring so far. If you’re not sure what colors you should be wearing this season, keep reading to add a little bliss to your makeup routine.

1. Estēe Lauder pure color lip gloss (shade Peach Glass):

I love peach hues on my lips for spring. It’s subtle if you prefer natural makeup with little effort. I’d definitely recommend Estēe Lauder lip glosses because of the quality.

2. Elizabeth Arden beautiful color lip gloss (shade Red Door Red):

Red gloss is for winter; but I make this color work for spring by pairing it with light-pink lipsticks. I love how hydrating and pigmented it is for spring. Just match it with light colors.

3. Kiko Makeup Milano lipstick (shade 911):

My go-to product is from Kiko, which I bought in Italy. I love that this is the perfect shade for spring and summer. It’s a light pink, but you can build it up for a bolder and brighter lip.

4. Revlon just bitten kissable balm stain (shade Lovesick):

When I need a product that will last all day, I use this lip product. The color is rich and vibrant for spring and summer. If you prefer a bold color, I would definitely recommend this product.

Tomorrow is my 21st birthday. To tie in my birthday with my blog, I decided to share 21 health tips I learned over 21 years. Hopefully, you’ll gained some insight and bliss from what I’ve learned over the last (almost) 21 years.

1. Your worth is NOT determined by the number on a scale. Workout and eat well because you want to be fit, strong, and healthy, not to lose weight.

2. Sleep is your best friend. Don’t skip out on your 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. You need it and you deserve it.

3. Never underestimate strength training. Cardio is great, but strength training is where you see the most results overall.

4. You can’t out work a BAD diet. Eating balanced meals is important. Even more important than working out. Put the fries down.

5. It’s okay to treat yourself. You’ve been eating healthy all week, EAT THE CAKE. It’ll be fine, I promise.

6. Two words: interval training. Learn about. incorporate it into your fitness routine, and be amazed at your results.

7. Read more. It’s good for your brain and it’s an escape if you’re stressed. If you hate reading, learn to love it because it’s important.

8. Remove toxic relationships. Ditch the selfish “friends” who bring you down or who are negative. You deserve better.

9. Positive vibes=positive life. Ditch negative people (see 8) and don’t have negative thoughts. You’re responsible for your own happiness.

10. Explore nature. Go kayaking, hiking, biking, surfing. Whatever activity you can do outside in nature, do it. You won’t regret it.

11. Stretch/Yoga. It’s a relaxing way to end a long, busy day. You can also try meditation to calm your mind.

12. Protein=power. Have protein in each meal and you’ll feel full and energized. You’ll also snack less. What more could you ask for?

13. Workout 3-5 days a week. Whether you believe it or not, you DO have time for the gym. Schedule gym time on your calendar and show up!

14. Don’t skip meals. Ever. You’re only hurting yourself and your body. YES, this includes breakfast. No exceptions.

15. Give thanks. Write down what you’re thankful for every single day. It’ll change your perspective and energy in a positive way.

16. Don’t quit your daydream. Have a goal? GO FOR IT. Don’t do something you hate. Find your passion/bliss and do it every single day.

17. Don’t drink calories. Be mindful of alcohol, Starbucks drinks, juices and smoothies. Hidden calories lurk in these drinks.

18. Walk more. Take 30 minutes a day to walk outside. You’ll feel happier and healthier.

19. Love your veggies. Eat them raw, blend them, cook them, grill them. Just make sure you have a large variety every day.

20. Be kind. To everyone, even your enemies. You don’t know what a stranger is going through. Be the kind person in someone’s day.

21. Be yourself. You’re beautiful and you’re capable of anything. Remember that you deserve to feel happy and healthy.

4 Items for a Festival-Inspired Outfit

BB41515Products listed: Shirt dress from Urban Outfitters ($64); Pendant headband from Forever 21 ($5.90); Cross-body bag from Target ($10); Birkenstocks from DSW ($99.95).

If you haven’t been keeping tabs on Coachella, the fashion is more unique than ever. With some interesting fashion choices from celebrities and die-hard festival fans, there’s always something to see.

Coachella has inspired me to create a festival-inspired look you can wear on an average day. Let’s be honest; I know you don’t want fringe-crazed outfits to wear, which is why I created a simple version for an everyday look. You’ll add bliss to your life knowing you can rock a festival look running errands or a relaxing day at a park. Here are my four must-have items:

Flowy dress:

Not everyone feels comfortable wearing crop tops and short shorts, which is why I decided to find a comfortable dress. This dress even looks soft in the pictures! With this staple piece in your wardrobe, you can pair scarves, cardigans and leggings when it’s not 80 degrees.

Fun headbands:

Ditch you flower crown for the day because you’ll probably get a few stares. Instead, find a headband that’s subtle yet attracts attention like this chained headband that lays on the back of your head. Bring out your inner festival fan with this bohemian-inspired accessory.

Quirky clutches:

I’ve been obsessed with fun, quirky clutches this year. If there is a cross-body bag in a unique shape, I want it. I think having one is a great conversation piece and shows off your free-spirited side. Find a bag that fits your essentials, and you’re good to go!

Comfy sandals:

Sandals that you can wear all day without your feet feeling sore is a good option for any occasion. Maybe you’re attending a graduation party or having a beach day with friends. Opt for neutral sandals that you can pair with any look.

5 Tips for Better Skin

BB41315Who doesn’t want to achieve a natural-looking, glowing complexion? It’s a top priority for most women, but what are the secrets for better skin?

The secrets are easier than you think. These five simple, effective tips will leave you with skin your friends will envy. You’ll add some bliss in your daily routine with clearer, brighter skin.

Don’t wear a full face of makeup everyday:

Many people struggle with this because they’re not confident with their skin. Wearing less makeup will clear your skin. Instead of wearing foundation, wear concealer in problem areas. This will allow your skin to breathe. Plan one day a week to wear no makeup.

Use a makeup remover and skin cleanser every night:

Some people are lazy and will use a makeup remover wipe, but won’t cleanse their skin or vice verse. Your nighttime skin routine can make or break how clear your skin is. Always remove your makeup, and follow-up with a cleanser, moisturizer, eye cream, etc.

Drink water:

A lot of people don’t realize that they’re not drinking enough water. Not only does this affect your overall health, but also your complexion. Well-hydrated skin helps balance your skin tone, decrease the number of breakouts, etc. Try drinking less soda and juices and more water.

Find breakout causes:

Wash your pillow cases once a week, clean your cell phone regularly and keep your hands off your skin. These are three of the many reasons why people have breakouts. Find what beauty blunder you’re making and correct it. It’ll save your time and money on acne products.

Moisturize twice a day:

Find two moisturizers that you love: one for the morning and one for night. If possible, splurge a little on your products and your skin will thank you. Make sure you apply them religiously on a daily basis. Choose a day moisturizer with SPF in it to protect your skin.

5 Fitness Tips You Need In Your Life

BB41015

Whether you love it or hate it, working out is an essential component for a healthy lifestyle. But fitness shouldn’t be a miserable experience. You should love your fitness routine; but if you don’t, try these 5 tips to get the most out of your next workout. You’ll easily add the bliss back to your routine with these changes that will improve how you work out.

1. Interval training:

Instead of jogging for 20 minutes, try interval training. Sprint as fast as you can for one minute, then jog lightly or walk for one minute. Repeat this cycle for 10 minutes then rest for five. Repeat the 10-minute cycle a second time, and you will have completed an effective cardio workout.

2. Foam rolling:

Traditional stretching is also necessary before and after a workout. Incorporate foam rolling in your cool down after a workout. It’s like a personal massage for your back and legs. You’ll release any tension in your muscles and relax them naturally.

3. Work out outside instead of the elliptical:

Using the elliptical for an hour five times a day is not how you want to work out. Instead, mix up your routine with different workouts outside like hiking, biking, swimming, rowing, etc. Going to the gym is fine, but variety will help you stay on track with working out regularly.

4. Use free weights instead of machines:

Machines are beneficial for building muscle, but free weights allow for more range in motion, which is more effective. Next time you’re looking to tone your arms, reach for free weights. You’ll see results and you won’t have to compete with guys for the machines.

5. Try planks instead of crunches:

Crunches don’t work out your upper and lower abs in addition to your obliques all at the same time. Try a plank for one minute, rest for 30 seconds, then plank again for one minute. Repeat 3 to 5 times. You target your abs in addition to your back, shoulder and butt!

Top 5 Trends For Spring

BB3815Products mentioned: Dress from Forever 21 ($24.90); Jacket from Forever 21 ($34.90); Brows photo from portable.tv; Clutch from Kate Spade ($298); Shoes from DSW ($39.95).

What I love about spring is all the trends available for the upcoming months. I love seeing what’s new in the fashion world, and seeing what I should add to my checklist. You’ll add some bliss to your spring wardrobe with these top 5 picks for spring:

Sleek in silver:

No, I don’t mean silver jewelery. I mean silver tops, skirts and dresses. I love that this trend is popular for spring because it is a neutral color we tend to take for granted. Although it’s strikingly similar its cousin color, gray, silver is a fun way to transform your everyday look.

Colorful coats:

Spring is the season for versatile jackets. You can easily wear denim, leather, military-style, etc. This season is about bold outerwear, so make sure you find a bold-colored or patterned coat that you can wear throughout April and May.

Bold brows:

Okay, so this isn’t fashion-related, but bold brows are definitely in for spring. I needed to include this because I think full brows are beautiful. Before, if you had big brows, you were made fun of. But now you’re seen as glamorous and attractive. So fill in those brows, ladies!

Beautiful bugs:

When I think of bugs being a fashion statement, of course I’m going be somewhat skeptical. If worn appropriately and tastefully, anyone can rock this trend. If you don’t want to wear bees on a top, try incorporating this trend in your accessories with a clutch or bag.

Patterned pumps:

As much as I love classic colored pumps, I’m happy to see that patterns are becoming more frequent with shoes. My two favorites are watercolor-inspired patterns and floral patterns. Spice up a neutral outfit with some bold heels, you’ll thank me, I swear.

What trend are you looking forward to trying for spring? What other trends are you loving right now? Make sure to leave a comment below!

April Beauty Wish List: $30 and Under

BB4615Tarte Cheek Stain: $30; Tarte Colored Clay Bronzer Blush: $30; Boscia Makeup-Breakup Cool Cleansing Oil: $28; Boscia Pore-Minimizing Mask: $8; Philosophy Raspberry Sorbet: $18.

With spring in full swing and summer just around the corner, it’s time to try new products that will prepare my skin for warmer weather. Here are my top 5 picks for April:

Cheek Stain:

Cheek stains are perfect for spring and summer because they’re lightweight and natural looking. Although I was once skeptical about this type of product, I’ve read so many reviews about how people won’t use regular blush anymore. I’m looking to see if this is worth the hype.

Bronzer Blush:

With summer just around the corner, it’s time to pull out bronzer for that natural summer glow. I love wearing bronzer in spring and summer, which is why I’m looking for a combination of both blush and bronze tones in a palette.

Cleansing Oil:

When my friend told me that she uses an oil-based cleanser to remove her makeup, I was definitely judging her. But, this is another products that I’ve learned to love, and look forward to try in replace of makeup remover wipes.

Mask:

Charcoal is well-known for removing blackheads, whiteheads and brightening your skin overall. It’s also great for minimizing pores, which is an added bonus. I’ve been looking for new masks to try, and I think a charcoal mask is just what I need to prep my skin for spring weather.

Body Wash:

If raspberry sorbet doesn’t sound like a summer treat, then I don’t know what does. I love scents that put me in the mood for a particular season. As much as I love spring, I’m still looking forward to summer. This clarifying product is perfect for the upcoming months.

Feel Good Fridays: Don’t Count Calories

Wheat before harvest (yield's field).Welcome to my newest, health-related post on Blissfully Brunette titled, “Feel Good Fridays.” These posts will be anything related to fitness, food and more. For my first post, I want to talk about whether you should count calories or not. Hopefully, you’ll gain some insight and add the bliss back to your daily diet. Here are my top 3 reasons why you SHOULDN’T count calories:

Obsessiveness:

Counting calories leads to obsessiveness, which can leading to minimal eating, or potential eating disorders. Limiting yourself and banning certain foods doesn’t help you lose weight, it only causes you to feel frustrated. Then, you’ll overeat and feel like a failure.

Inaccuracy:

Counting calories doesn’t mean your accounting for your intake of fat, sodium, sugar or carbohydrates. it’s important to take this into consideration because high sodium or sugar can increase weight or cause you to plateau.

Guilt:

If your overall intake of calories for a day is 2,000, and you go over your limit, you’ll feel guilty. This can lead to overeating or make you want to starve yourself, which are both unhealthy options if you’re looking to lose weight.

So what should you do instead?

Keep track of your meals for the day (not calories). If you’re well-rounded in eating veggies, fruit and protein, you don’t need to count every calorie or gram of fat. This will keep you on track with health goals without overdoing it.

I hope this post helped you learn more about calories and how to keep track of what you eat in a healthy way. Have you ever counted calories? Do you think this is a positive or a negative way to track what you eat? Make sure to leave a comment below.

Fashion Essentials: Easter

BB4115Products listed: White top from Old Navy; Dress from American Eagle; Wedges from DSW; Shorts from Ann Taylor LOFT; Bag from ModCloth.

Easter weekend is just around the corner, so I thought it would be appropriate to list some of my fashion essentials for this holiday. Make sure to like this post if you want to see more fashion essentials on my blog!

White tops:

White is one of my favorite colors to bring out for spring. The crisp, clean lines of white clothing is always a sure sign of spring. I still keep it weather-friendly by wearing 3/4 sleeve tops.

Comfortable dresses:

Dresses with sleeves are essential for at least seven months of the year where I live, which is why I love this jersey dress with a flowing, drop-waist silhouette. This is perfect for spring.

Wedges:

When the boots are away, the wedges will come out to play. I live in wedges because they’re comfortable and they look sophisticated and classy with different looks.

Patterned shorts:

Shorts are great to have for spring. I love shorts with different patterns because they add something unique to an outfit. All you need is a plain top to complement it.

Cute clutches:

You can’t go wrong with a bag that’s functional and fun. This clutch is perfect for spring, but can be paired with a variety of outfits for different occasions.

5 Beauty Hacks For Spring

bb33015I love DIY beauty treatments. They’re inexpensive, and you most likely have the ingredients at home. What more could you ask for? Now that spring is officially here, it’s time to refresh your hair and skin with life-changing beauty fixes. If you want to add a little bliss to your life, try these five beauty hacks:

For white teeth, try charcoal:

Okay, so you might not have this laying around your house. But, it can be found online or at a store. You’ll need one capsule of activated charcoal when brushing your teeth. Add some with toothpaste on a toothbrush and brush normally. You’ll notice a difference in a few days.

For stretch marks, try coffee grounds:

Coffee scrubs are a great way to remove unwanted stretch marks. Especially for spring, you want to show off your legs with confidence. All you need is leftover coffee grounds and olive oil. Apply on any areas with stretch marks. Repeat this twice a week for effective results.

For blackheads, try gelatin:

This is the first time I’ve heard of this trick. It mimics a DIY version of Biore strips. Mix 1 tbsp Knox Unflavored Gelatin with 2 tbsp of milk in a plastic cup. Microwave mixture for 10 to 15 seconds and apply to face immediately. This will remove impurities on your skin.

For a smooth shave, try Vaseline:

If you want your skin to feel extra smooth for spring, apply a healthy amount on your legs before shaving. This will open your pores while shaving, so you won’t have razor bumps or irritation. It’ll also sink into your skin and moisturize for a better shave.

For shiny hair, try coconut oil:

This is my favorite beauty hack. I apply coconut oil raw to my hair and leave it in for 20 minutes. After, I’ll shampoo my hair as normal and apply a dime-sized amount of conditioner to my hair. My hair looks flawless every time. I try to do this once a month for best results.

What is your favorite at-home, DIY treatment? Make sure to leave a comment below, or tweet your favorites to me @BlissBrunette.

Make March Your Month: Post 4

BB32715

This is the last post in my weekly series “Make March Your Month.” If you haven’t viewed my previous posts in the series, here they are in order:

Post 1: Introduction and Achieving Your Goals

Post 2: Choosing Positivity

Post 3: Forget the Past & Focus on the Future

For my final post, I wanted to talk about something we all need to work on in our lives. We are told that compassion is important because everyone is struggling through something difficult in their lives whether it’s a death, questioning their career, breakup, etc. Life can be hard sometimes and it’s okay to recognize how difficult it is.

However, we don’t always give ourselves the love and compassion we deserve. A quote we all should live by is, “If your compassion does not include yourself it is incomplete.” We are fueled by stereotypes and perceptions of beauty and lifestyles that we pressure ourselves to be the best. There’s nothing wrong with achieving goals and striving to become our happiest, healthiest self. But, there are problems with giving into unnecessary standards of beauty and happiness.

We are subjected to this constantly. Photoshopped images of celebrities, or standards that women should meet in life in general like get married by the time you’re 25, have two children by 30, have a booming career before you;re 30, etc. All of this pressure inflicts negativity and we feel inferior if we don’t meet these standards. Here are tips on how to ignore the hate and focus on love:

Do you:

You don’t need to feel pressured to accomplish anything other than your personal goals. Don’t focus on what other people are doing. Focus on your wants and needs. You’ll find that doing this will allow you to feel naturally happy and healthy.

Stop self hate:

You’re not fat, ugly, stupid or any other negative adjective. You are human and you make mistakes and you are perfectly imperfect. If you don’t reach your goal weight or have six-figure job, it’s okay. You cannot stress and hate yourself for it. Remember to always love yourself.

Don’t compare:

This is similar to the “do you” tip. But, don’t think you’re a failure just because you are in a different place than someone else. You don’t need to get married by 25 (or at all). There isn’t a perfect timeline to complete every life goal. We are all different and that’s okay.

I hope you all enjoyed my weekly series for March! Make sure to like this post if you want to see more weekly series and leave a comment below telling your experiences with this topic.

3 Tips For Wearing Denim

bb32515

Denim is a timeless component in one’s wardrobe, but finding the right pair can be frustrating. Denim is something you should always feel comfortable and confident in, which is why I’m sharing my top three tips for buying and wearing denim. You’ll add some bliss to this essential piece of clothing and feel great the next time you’re shopping for jeans.

Consider different washes and styles:

Denim is versatile, which is one of its many positive attributes, but it can be difficult to find a pair that looks great for our body type. With different washes and styles, how do you know which one to choose? Everyone is different with what flatters their body and their preference in a style and wash. Take the time to explore your options. A good rule a thumb is if you’re looking for slimming denim, opt for dark washed and relaxed-fitted. If you’re naturally slim, try light wash denim and different styles.

Consider the shoes you’re wearing with your denim:

Yes, jeans are versatile, but proper footwear to complement your denim is essential to pull your look together. For skinny jeans, pair your favorite knee-high boots; whereas with boot cut, wear your low-heel pumps or ankle boots. It’s important to know what you can mix and match with denim and shoes. This can take your look to the next level if done properly.

Don’t be afraid to try something new:

We all have the one store we consistently go to for jeans because we know the exact style, wash and size that is perfect for us. Trust me, I am guilty of this, too. We all do it because we want we are comfortable with wearing. But, you might be surprised if you pop into a different store and spend time trying on their jeans. You could find a new favorite style. Also, don’t own one certain style of jeans. It’s important to have variety for denim.

Products mentioned: Straight Jeans from LOFT ($69.50); Barely Boot Jeans from Express ($79.90); Skinny Jeans from GAP ($69.95); Jeggings from Cotton On ($19.95).

Refresh Your Makeup For Spring

BB32315Now that we are toward the end of March, it’s time to put away the berry lipsticks and dark eyeshadow palettes. Giving your makeup a refreshed look for spring can help your mood and outlook. As warmer weather approaches, you can feel a little bliss knowing spring is just around the corner. Try these three tips to refresh your makeup for spring:

Go neutral:

If you’re not ready to pull out spring and summer eyeshadow shades, fear not! You can easily rock a neutral look on a day-to-day basis. Just find two shades that complement your skin tone (one light and one dark) and apply to define your eyes. Buy a small eyeshadow palette that has a few different options, like this palette from Sephora. You can mix up your makeup and look refreshed.

Pops of pink:

Blush and lipstick can go unnoticed, but they’re two places where the season play an important role. Berry-toned blushes and lipsticks are popular in fall and winter, but now that spring is quickly approaching, changing to light pink hues is your best option. I love Hibiscus Pop from Maybelline. This can double as a cream blush. Just apply a small amount on your cheeks and blend.

Lighten your base:

Wearing foundation every day can leave your skin feeling damaged and dry after a long winter. Try to skip out on foundation a few days each week. Instead, use concealer to cover any dark circles or pimples. Allowing your skin breathe will clear it of any blemishes or irritation. If you need more coverage, opt for a BB or CC cream, which is lighter than foundation.

Make March Your Month: Post 3

BB32015When I talk to people about goals, there is common element that can negatively affect what they want to accomplish. Sometimes, we are focused on past experiences, and we allow them to affect our future goals.

I think talking about this can help you learn about yourself and help you achieve your goals. It will also help you move past previous experiences and focus on the present and future. You’ll gain some bliss as you continue to work toward your goals and create your happiest, healthiest self.

First, why do we look to the past and ask ourselves “What if I did this instead? Or, “Would I be happier if I didn’t do that?”  I used to be the queen of regret and I contemplated my past regularly. We wonder what would happen if we chose a different company to work for or college to attend. In some cases, we don’t feel regret, but we question our previous choices. It’s important not to regret our decisions or allow our past to affect what lies ahead. This can affect your potential goals and happiness.

How do we overlook this problem and live a happy, healthy, regret-free life. In some cases, it’s not that simple because it’s dependent on your situation. However, there are a few universal ways you can solve any regret or contemplation you have about your past.

Reflect with  logic:

At the time of whatever decision you made, you had specific reasons and intentions behind your decision. Over time, you grow and your values, intentions and reasoning will change. But, that doesn’t mean you should regret your past decisions. You should allow your past to help you grow in the future.

Forgive yourself:

If you made a mistake or a decision you aren’t happy about, forgive yourself. Don’t allow your past decision crush your strength in the present. Remember, it’s important to love yourself and grow from past experiences. Forgiving yourself will allow you to accomplish your goals without remorse of the past.

Move on:

Learning and growing from past experiences shouldn’t give you a negative representation of what it to come for your future. Once you reflect and forgive yourself, it’s important to move on. Don’t allow those experiences to affect what you have in store for your future.

We all have those “what if” moments, or experiences where we wish we could go back and change, but your past should not affect your present and future. If you find that you’re being held back from your goals because of your past, try these tips. And remember, your past does not determine your future.

Have you ever experienced regret from a decision that is affecting a current goal? Make sure to leave a comment below sharing your experience.
